I’ve touched on this in previously, and I know this can be an issue for many of you, the idea of starting to blog really intimidates people. Honestly, I can’t think of any reason why you should feel intimidated. Let me be your enabler here, blogging is a skill, and like any skill you can develop it with some sustained effort and a little passion. I know it sounds over simplified but this is true.
Keep the blogging motivation alive
Let me tell you the honest truth about starting a blog. And this is one of the main reasons you need to stay motivated. You may have spent time planning that all important first post, but don’t be disappointed or surprised if in your first week no one reads your post.
With your first few posts you’re not going to get a ton of traffic, even your first 10 posts might not produce a lot of visitors. Honestly, this is perfectly normal. If this is what you know is going to happen, it should be easy for you to continue, continue with your passion and this will be infectious to visitors who do eventually find you.
Remember why you’re blogging
Think back to my previous post one more time. Go back to your blog planning stage, time spent thinking about what you will write about is time that is well spent. My golden nugget of information here is do not write about what you think people want to read about. This level of writing will never yield any kind of flair or uniqueness. So instead write about what you are interested in. The things that inspire you will also inspire others. Use this love for those things and you will generate inspiring content. This in turn will bring readers as they absorb your passion.
Keep your blog posts targeted
Keep your blog posts targeted. If you have a number of different skills, use this knowledge in a specific way. If your posts are too broad you will find the lose their impetus. This will only lead to your brand being weekend. The key here is to stay true to your initial plan. If you want readers to recognize you because a particular area of expertise then keep writing to strengthen your authority in that area. If you don’t do this you will make it hard for people to recognize your single unified brand.
Don’t be so formal, keep your tone personal
Remember who you are writing for. Almost keep things conversational infuse your personality in your blog posts. Lose the formal tone and be personal with your readers. This will mean that your reader relate to you on a personal level. As a side note don’t be afraid to tell your readers a bit about you. Let them know who’s writing.
Prepare an email follow up series
Have you ever heard anyone say you should build an email list? Why not create an email list that you can update. Make sure you give your reader a place to sign up on your front page this will make sure you have reader for longer. You can also email them when you write your latest post. If they are really interested in your content they will be happy for those email updates.
Pick a great title for your post
When you think about writing a blog post make sure it has a great title. Make sure your keyword is in your title and keep it brief. Don’t tell your readers everything in the title. You can easily draw readers in if you spend some time picking a great keyword specific title.
Make it easy to find content
Organize your blog posts clearly in a structured way. This way reader will quickly be able to find the content they want without getting frustrated. Make there life easier and they will keep consuming your content. Quite simply make use of:
- header tags
Bare in mind that most readers will not want to read sentences and paragraphs that are long. This means keeping them short and too the point
