Whether you tackle the broad networks like Facebook and Twitter, or your focus is on a more niche-friendly social network, utilizing these masses of humanity to you and your blog’s advantage is an excellent way to push new, hungry traffic to your articles, building a lasting name for yourself all the while.

Whether you’ve got a well-aged blog that simply needs more attention, or you’re fresh out of the gate and need a promotional boost, here are three helpful tips for successful social media promotion:

1. Tackle the Big Boys

First thing’s first: if you want to tap into some of the largest pools of potential traffic that the web has to offer, you’re going to need to become active in your niche on both Facebook and Twitter.

With approximately one billion and 450 million users respectively, these two networks alone represent nearly one fifth of the world’s population, and that means that getting in good on the world’s two largest social websites is key if you want to take advantage of all of those potential visitors.

To get started, simply create the profiles that you’ll want to work with, integrate them smoothly into your website, and then get to work building rapport and interesting discussion with the first few visitors who stumble by.

With a bit of time and attention, you’ll be able to draw the most suitable personalities from both Facebook and Twitter, representing a huge leap forward in your reach.

2. Know Your Niche

Given the huge amount of users that you’re likely to run into on any given social network, you should have no trouble tracking down those who have a particular interest in your blogging topic.

While that works to your advantage in promoting your blog content, it also means that you’re going to need to position yourself as a true expert in your niche if you want to be able to gain the respect needed to act as a voice of authority.

To that end, be sure to stay up-to-date on your niche, always keeping yourself in the know and therefore being able to provide your social followers with timely, accurate, and engaging content and conversation.

Besides pleasing your current fans, you’ll be surprised at just how quickly word of your know-how will spread, continuing to earn you more interested, targeted followers each and every day.

3. Be Engaging, Not Robotic

As is the case with most corners of the web, spam bots – not to mention people who simply sound like spam bots – abound. In order to really engage your readers, both actual and potential, make a point to let your personality shine through in everything that you do!

Instead of simply sharing your content, take the time to offer new and unique insights on what you’ve written and why, encouraging other users to take up the conversation; before you know it, your additions to the social media landscape will take on a life of their own.

Hopefully it goes without saying, but let us add here that you should never, ever use automated means of sharing via social media. Even if you’re using generally accepted methods of auto-posting content, automation itself can make you lazy, keeping you from logging into the social sphere and connecting with your audience on a more meaningful level.

Instead of working overtime trying to save yourself a few minutes each day, set aside that same amount of time to make a personal appearance on your favorite networks, adding to ongoing conversations and starting new ones of your own.
