How to Migrate from Blogger to WordPress without Losing Google Rankings

Selecting the best blogging platform has become a tough decision. What most of the newbie bloggers do is, they 1st begin with Blogger and gradually migrate to WordPress. WordPress has a great collection of tools and options that we require for blogging and the only problem with WordPress is you have to buy a hosting which is a bit costly. Whereas, hosting your blog on Blogger is free. But in this so sophisticated blogging era, it is so tough to rely on Blogger and you must migrate from Blogger to WordPress for enjoying  professionalism in what you blog about.

Moreover, WordPress offers a facility for importing your Blogger data into it so that the content will remain the same without any change. But doing this alone will result in loss of some search engine ranking. So in this post, let us see how to migrate from blogger to WordPress without losing your Google rankings.

migrate from Blogger to WordPress

An Overview

We are going to switch a blogger blog  to the self-hosted WordPress with a custom top level domain. If you do this, your blog’s Google rankings like post URLS, traffic, Pagerank, RSS subscribers, etc. will remain somewhat same. Before starting the transferring process it will be a wise decision to take a backup of your blogger blog completely including the posts, comments, and the template. Also make sure, you have bought the domain and hosting and have installed the WordPress on it. Now let us move to the process of switching.

Steps to migrate from Blogger to WordPress without losing Google ranking

  1. Go to your WordPress Admin Dashboard and navigate to the Tools section.
  2. From the Tools menu, select Import.
  3. From the list that appears, choose Blogger.
  4. Click on the ‘Install Now’ button in it and after that click on ‘Activate Plugin & Run Importer’ link.
  5. In the next page, hit on the button saying ‘Authorize’. And Google will ask for permission and you should click on the ‘Allow Access’ button.
  6. After this, you can see a list of your Blogger blogs. Hit the ‘Import’ button next to the blog that you wish to import to WordPress.
  7. Now, you must copy the PHP code segment given below to Notepad or any other text editor and should save as blogger.php then upload this file into the WordPress theme directory (wp-content/themes/themename) via FTP or cPanel.

<?php
 /*
  Template Name: blogger
 */

 global $wpdb;
 $old_url = $_GET['q'];

 if ($old_url != "") {
   $permalink = explode("blogspot.com", $old_url);

   $q = "SELECT guid FROM $wpdb->posts LEFT JOIN $wpdb->postmeta ".
        "ON ($wpdb->posts.ID = $wpdb->postmeta.post_id) WHERE ".
        "$wpdb->postmeta.meta_key='blogger_permalink' AND ".
        "$wpdb->postmeta.meta_value='$permalink[1]'";

  $new_url = $wpdb->get_var($q)? $wpdb->get_var($q) : "/";

  header ("HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently");
  header("Location: $new_url");
 }
?>

8. Now, go to your WordPress dashboard and move to Page > Add New Page.

9. Enter “blogger” in the URL field and post it keeping the body empty. Then choose, “Blogger” from the drop-down menu and publish the page.

10. After that, go to your Blogger dashboard and select the desired blog and navigate to its Template section.

11. Click on the Edit HTML button, click on ‘Revert to classic template’ and add the following code into the text box that appears. You should not forget to replace the blog URL with yours with the http:// and the trailing slash.

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">
